In the novel The Electrician and The Seamstress the characters found themselves grappling with unprecedented behaviors from friends and neighbors as they collectively entered survival mode. My maternal grandfather Bruno's experience, including not helping an old man as he was beaten by a Nazi SS, and witnessing looting in Kiel, reflected the extreme measures people took to secure resources in the midst of crisis. As he journeyed back from Siberia, Bruno, too, resorted to theft for the sake of survival.
Human behavior during times of crisis is a complex interplay of historical context, socio-economic conditions, and cultural values. In Nazi Germany, the pervasive fear and control exerted by the Gestapo and SS coerced some individuals into betraying their neighbors, driven by a compelling sense of self-preservation amidst an oppressive regime. The severe consequences for non-compliance added layers of complexity to this behavior.
