Karla and Bruno Story: Castle Tours

By Monica Granlove

In the captivating narrative of The Electrician and The Seamstress, protagonists Karla and Burno grappled with financial constraints, a prevailing reality in Germany post-World War I, throughout World War II, and in its aftermath. Despite their economic challenges, their romantic journey was characterized by a resourceful pursuit of captivating activities.

Amidst limited resources, the couple found joy in simple yet meaningful pastimes. Leisurely strolls through parks and farms, the delight of window shopping, and the enchantment of Christmas markets became cherished moments in their dating life. Their ingenuity and zest for life extended beyond routine, leading to adventurous day trips to the bustling city of Hamburg, just south of Kiel.

However, the zenith of their explorations lay in their castle tour, a grand adventure meticulously planned with packed lunches and train journeys to explore various castles. Accommodations ranged from stays with family to sleeping under the stars, creating enduring memories amidst their humble means. The narrative unfolds as a testament to their resilient spirits and the enduring power of love amid life's challenges.

Here are their favorites

Bergedorf Castle
Bergedorf Castle
Nestled in the eastern expanse of Hamburg, the Bergedorf Castle, or Schloss Bergedorf in German, stands as a venerable testament to history, tracing its roots back to the 13th century. Today, this castle serves as the proud home of the Museum for Bergedorf and Vierlande, a treasure trove that illuminates the rich tapestry of the region's past.

During Karla and Bruno's visit in 1928, the castle, once a bastion of governmental affairs for the city council, became the backdrop for a delightful date. Their exploration of the neo-Gothic architectural marvel sparked animated conversations, especially as they marveled at sections of the castle that bore the imprints of the 1600s.

The couple found themselves unintentionally sharing their picnic space with a bovine audience. Engrossed in their discussions, Karla and Bruno failed to notice the gradual encroachment of cows grazing on the grass around them, creating an unexpected and amusing twist to their castle visit.

Ahrensburg Castle
Ahrensburg Castle

Nestled just northeast of Hamburg, Ahrensburg Castle, or Schloss Ahrensburg in German, stands as a magnificent example of Renaissance-style architecture with roots dating back to the late 16th century. Enveloped by a picturesque park, this castle welcomes the public to explore its historic halls.

In the year 1929, the castle found itself in private hands. However, Bruno, having previously done electrical work for the family, seized the opportunity to request a special tour for himself and Karla. The gracious family not only opened the doors of the castle to the couple but also extended the hospitality of an overnight stay. This unexpected invitation transformed their visit into a splendid adventure, creating enduring memories for Karla and Bruno.

Eutin Castle
Eutin Castle

Nestled in the picturesque Holstein Switzerland region, Eutin Castle, or Schloss Eutin in German, boasts a captivating castle surrounded by a serene lake. With origins dating back to the 12th century, the castle stands as the cultural centerpiece of the town. Its architecture is a testament to a rich history, seamlessly blending Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical styles to create a visually striking and distinctive appearance.

This castle held a special place in Karla and Bruno's hearts as one of their preferred destinations. Although the castle was under state ownership during their visits, their primary focus was the beautiful gardens. Karla, ever the thoughtful planner, would prepare a delightful picnic lunch, setting the stage for moments filled with handholding and laughter.

Located at the heart of Eutin, the castle is embraced by a beautiful park and is in close proximity to the tranquil Eutin Lake, enhancing its allure and historical ambiance. The inner courtyard, adorned with well-preserved Renaissance and Baroque facades, serves as a venue for cultural events, including the esteemed Eutin Opera Summer Festival. In this enchanting setting, Karla and Bruno found not only a feast for the eyes but also a backdrop for cherished moments during their visits.

Glücksburg Castle
Glücksburg Castle

Nestled farther north in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Glücksburg Castle, or Schloss Glücksburg in German, stands as a striking example of Renaissance-style architecture. Situated near the picturesque Flensburg Fjord, it has earned the moniker "water castle" for its enchanting proximity to the water. The castle's symmetrical design, complemented by towers and a captivating blend of red brick and white plaster, reflects the quintessential characteristics of Northern German Renaissance architecture.

With roots dating back to the 16th century, Glücksburg Castle boasts a rich history, initially constructed by Duke Johann the Younger. Over the years, it evolved into a significant residence for the ducal family of Glücksburg. In the 1920s, the castle continued its storied past as a former royal residence, intricately linked with the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg—a branch of the Danish royal family. The castle's historical significance is not merely confined to its architectural grandeur but also encompasses its role in the broader tapestry of European royalty.
